I was just curious about what exactly the whole yellow, blue, red (N, R, X) rating system means. Theoretically, the X ones are supposed to be more explicit than the R one, which are more explicit than the N ones. But I've seen some N ones that seemed more explicity that some R ones, and some R ones that seemed more explicity than some X ones. Though I have found the ISM rating system to still hold true more of the time than the American movie-rating system, but of course that isn't saying all that much ;-) So are there certain objective criteria that the folios (and videos) are judged by to see what rating they will get, or is it just a feeling that the editors get about each submission?
Probably just one of my late-night over-analyzations, though I'm sure others have probabally wondered the same...

Me too. It seems misleading in my limited experience. Isn't R more explicit than X in the States?

Nope, here in the good ol' US of A, it goes G, PG, PG13, R, NC17, and X is pretty much reserved for pornos...

Thanks, Liz. Once I was old enough to see X-rated movies ("Deadlier than the Male" was my first, which will give my age away) I lost track of the ratings system here in the UK. Except 18 over here is not porno (unless you count some recent releases), wheras R18 is, in a soft-core kinda way. See http://www.bbfc.co.uk/.

Allow me...
N is for Naked
R is for Raunchy
X is for eXplicit
and there is a handy dandy icon/ratings explanation here.

Well generally speaking it's pretty easy to rate a folio on the above criteria.
N folios are generally those that contain full body nudity but do not contain any explicitly revealing photographs of someone's bits.
R folios contain full body nudity by default, and may also be peppered with the odd glimpse anything that may be considered a little bit shocking, such as *gasp* inner labia, or an embarrassing 1990's LP collection containing the entire works of Poison.
X speaks for itself, and this is where you will find almost anything from Jules or Dandy.
Sometimes the folios may be rated a certain way on the basis of one or two photographs that contain more explicit material, and for a variety of reasons, such as if they do not fit in with the general theme or are of poor quality, we will not include them in the published set. Usually we try to keep an eye out for how this affects the overall rating, but the whole not being robots thing gets in the way every now and then.
Clear as mud?

I agree there are lots of odd individual ratings, but I think it's the administration slipping up rather than a reflection of policy. The general rule seems to be: no gaping whatsits allowed in N, penetration with fingers or anthing else means X, but vaginal fluids OK for R. Not sure I agree with the criteria though.

I'm curious as to why a folio gets rated before cuts are made as opposed to after.

Ah, enlightenment at last! You rate them on how many tufts are sticking out ;-)

It's just a workflow thing.
