Im new here can you show me around? ;)

Hi,
Ive just joined ISM and I see there's a real community here and Id love to say Hi and get to know everyone.

Boring bio details about me:
Im a 23 year old student and part time amature model,
I love my motorbike, music, films, webdesign, bass guitar, comics, gadgets and art,

Other boring details in my page here: http://www.ishotmyself.com/public/view_ … o=velocity   smile
And here:
http://www.alishax.com   smile

So if you wanna say hi leave me a post, any ideas on future 'folios I could do or which of my shots works the best would also be great, I want to make quirky original sets like my motorbike one rather than 'girl on bed nude' ones (not that they are bad I just like being different) if you have any ideas let me know!

HIya.  I already welcomed ya in another thread.  Hope you stay.  My handle is in honor of a girl I used to work with,  who in posts,  I just refer to as the Scuzzy Girl.

Not intending to fool anyone,  I'm a straight guy with a liberal gf.  I would't call it an "Open relationship",  just a liberal one.  If I could have my druthers,  I would be a full time photographer,  but that's a hard way to make a living.  So to pay rent,  I am a stagehand out of San Jose, California.  It's an interesting occupation:  I see lots of shows,  lots of talent  (or lack of it) but the hours are really hard on the body.  Sir Paul just came through a couple of weeks ago.

In fact to digress a moment,  I really enjoyed his sound check.  He didn't play any of his music or any Beatles tunes.  Instead he just sang old crooner songs out of the '30s.  It was pretty neat.

Anyway,  several of us regs live in the Bay Area and San Francisco is claimed to be the most liberal city in the US,  so we have an unusual view on life here.  We seem to have lost Trebora which is unfortunate because he lived in Antartica and gave the forums a very unique persepective.  You will enjoy the view points from around the world and the playful jabbing we do at each other occaisionally.  I have been in a few so-called "libral" forums,  but the commaderie here far excedes anything else I've been involved in.

Welcome to the world-wide family.

Hi Alisha
Sorry to hear things are a bit uncomfortable in Surrey. Be nice to find a way to express your affection publicly. If your into them, I'm told by someone in Texas that all women coach parties are good for that. You've got strength  in numbers, and everyone's descending on a place where nobody knows you. I think things are a little bit better here in Bath, and most of the west country. Most adults seem to say "what ever floats your boat" I haven't seen any local gay bashing headlines here either.  If you ring the cops about your work colleagues, I think your claim is placed in an unsubstantiated part of the hate crimes database. That's the thing. You see now there's a legal framework from hate crime to marraige, I think proper acceptance is guaranteed, It's just the length of time it takes thats uncertain.

Anyway, hope you like writing on the boards and I like your website, it's good.

Hi Alisha, I've just seen you in the Gay marriage thread as well. Hope you enjoy posting.
I've got a few ideas for you.

I don't know how comfortable you are with video. You could try one of those.

You could do a double shoot with your partner.

I like the bondage rope pic on your site, you could do self bondage.

I've never seen an underwater folio. You can get submergible cases for most cameras that let you use them underwater. but I think their quite dear, so I'm probably never going to see this happen.

You could press yourself against a window and take a picture from the other side.

You could paint patterns on yourself with stencils

Projecting slides of yourself onto yourself.

You could get yourself wet outside and then shoot your body close all covered in water droplets, also shooting into the sun through water spray should make it glisten. If you do the same in the pitch black. the water droplets may twinkle in the flashlight.

Well that's it, my run of inspiration is  over. they might be all non-starters but You look attractive, so it's not going to be that hard to get good shots no matter what your doing really smile
I suppose it just depends on how much time you want to spend experimenting.

A belated welcome Alisha, from another resident of the UK. It looks like SCSIgirl has beaten me to it so, I will just say that I loved your "Velocity" shoot and that you seem to have a pretty good handle on what the camera likes, without input from amateurs like us ;-) I do believe that you could shoot yourself alongside anything and still be the natural focus. It's a gift that some people possess and you have it, so make the most of it. If I had the time, I think I'd shoot you myself!

Re: Im new here can you show me around? ;)

I don't think professionals have a monopoly on ideas. It's the execution of them that I fall on. I think some people can catch just that right moment. If you view a video and move the playhead frame by frame you often see that each one is quite different. A naff picture can  often sit a split second away from a golden shot. That's the sort of photo I catch very seldom and as a very happy accident. So anyone who can do that intentionally and often, has got a really nice skill.

Alisha, this is the best folio on ISM. http://www.ishotmyself.com/public/view_ … hp?g=shard
If you look at it, it might give you a sort of feel for things. It's nice to think up ideas for setting up shots, but finding a good location and having some creative spontaneity, I don't think you can't beat that.

Hi ya,

I couldn't see the folio you linked too my access isnt high enough sad

But I appriciate all your comments, I did shoot a lot of pictures and choose the best ones, more because it was freezing than anything else, seems to be a good method though, lol.

Im trying to think of locations but its again, very cold, no sunshine and my garden looks like a garage anyway as you have seen... I might go for moody dark photos or try to get a large mirror or two and do some Esher style pics, but of me naked, rather than stairs.

My partner is not a friend of the camera, but I will ask her, shes a lovely tattooed hottie... prehaps alcohol would help... smile

I cant do bondage like the pic on http://www.alishax.com that was done for me by someone I lost contact with.  I have got some nice latex tape I was saving for clubbing that might be good though.

So many ideas, if only I could submit some of this as coursework! Instead Im being made to research and design a typeface inspired by everyday objects and draw all the upper and lower case letters, numerals and puntuation out by hand, in 4 weeks.... :s

Hey your doing graphic design. That's a really old and seemingly at the time pointless project. But it does focus your mind. Cutlery looks nice arranged into letters on a table. I'd do that and then include pens, pen knifes, or anything I liked the look of. I'd photograph them and then find some common theme and shapes I liked and sketch them out. I'd then use these common themes that work, and design the whole font in Freehand. I think if the font is a nice design that you've discovered by doing all this, and you've got the supporting work to illustrate the design process, they'll love it (probably smile)

Hi ya blissed,

The cutlery idea is good might have to steal that! smile

Im up to objects in daily life (lamp-posts that look like the letter T and so on) so far... was thinking something with wax might be cool....

Im princess of supporting work right now, *proud smile* I've spent pages and pages talking about  fonts and typography and terminology (kerning, x-height etc).

I just get frustated as its all a bit badly taught and so rushed and its taking time off the project I do like; an A1 poster of a figure in Illustrator which embodies ideas of 'mind, body and spirit', much nicer to do.

Sorry </ rant! > lol. I just had a really wasted day today, if a techer is there one out of three hours, they arent a teacher in my opinion! smile

Welcome to ISM Alisha. I, like everyone else it seems, loved your folio. I'm really happy to see that you've joined the forums too, as I really think it adds so much to the experience of ISM. I hope to hear and see a lot more of you in the future.

Yeah having ideas is easier without the deadlines being over your own head, i think talkign to other people i usually end up giving my best ideas away by accident then having none for myself!

Im trawling on with the reasearch and other priliminary parts of the project right now, letting my own and your ideas float about in my head until they sort themselves out into a working plan. Thats usually what works for me, the more i try to think about it the less sure i get ... lol

Have you done any design courses yourself? you seem to have the brain for it.

Re: Im new here can you show me around? ;)

Yeah, I did an OND in Graphic design at Swindon, which sounds like a bit of a joke but was by far the best experience.  Then I did an HND  at Salisbury, because I had fatigue and I wasn't up to the work load of a degree. But I should have probably done a degree in  fine art I think. I love highly detailed postage stamp sized graphics, like on tickets, bank cards and ipod graphics. They've got the same appeal to me as miniature paintings.
I did something like that in a webpage design here http://www.jlara.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/music.html It's just a rough and they didn't want it. It was for an Arts  festival and probably the last thing I design for anyone else. I hate designing for other people , unless they share my aesthetic almost completely smile Which doesn't really make me a very flexible designer I know smile It's just that when I get an idea, I like going off on my own trip with it. Which is actually what I'm doing now with an animated video.

Studying in london's got to be better than Salisbury hasn't it. I bet theres loads of things to do.

Firstly, Welcome Alisha, it's always good to have ISM project contributors contributing on the forum as well, from what I've read so far you're going to be a well established part of the forum family real soon. And you don't need any pointers, your folio was fantastic...

I thought  you mentioned being a whitewater rafting guide as well?or did I imagine that?

Erm...what is commaderie? Or did you mean camaraderie? I think you did and I utterly agree, 100%...and your mentioning it just makes me go all warm and fuzzy...we love you too Scuzzy

Yeah, I think it would be awesome. I've wanted to see this for ages and have mentioned a few times. Verity actually experiemented very briefly with a disposable underwater camera while we were on holidays, but those are crappy cameras and the potential for an underwater folio to be beautiful would be wasted using equipment like that.

Your absolutely right about the submergible cases, they are very expensive and on top of that I think only a very competent, if not highly skilled, camera person would be capable of doing a good ISM underwater. Pia springs to mind....

Yep,  been doing white water for many years,  including Class V's like the T (Tuolumne) and the Middle Fork of the American.  But for a fun day without too much terror,  it's hard to beat the Class III South Fork of the American.

I did it commerically for a while for California River Trips but the personal "friends" trips are the most rewarding.

Not an ISM,  but if Underwater pics interest you,  Google up Howard Schatz and the San Francisco Ballet in the black pool.  He has been copied,   but never equaled.

Indeed, very cool- hey Blissed, for some reason the link you posted above got truncated and wouldn’t work, but I trimmed it to

which worked to the main site...

how about more of the underwater ones??  and as you said, the Human body-  check them out!
