I'm not, and I don't need to make any excuse, for an innocent mistake. Because that's totally true, that I did open my heart, I think it was naive and I'm sorry you were offended by it, because it was the last thing on  my mind when I wrote it, and I obviously know now it should have been the first. So I hope you can except my apologies for it.
This is the only place I've ever had any problem and coincidentally the only place where the graphic smilies are turned off, so perhaps theres a reason why their turned on everywhere else, that they have an emotional impact and positively effect peoples mood. They give you more freedom to express your intent, and therefore you can include a wider range of expression, and part of that range, that I need, is absent here. So I'm going to have to bare that in mind. So if you've been offended, thanks for remaining civil, and I do appreciate your advice, The last think I want to do is leave trail of destruction behind me. I've already done that with my car. So now I've ridden a bike for years and I manage to upset a few people with that too. The pavements just not wide enough. So thanks for your advice, but please bare in mind, like everyone else, I'm not perfect. So if I say anything you think is a bit doubtful, just remember, I have no other intent, and I'm not here to run your down, so try not to take it to heart.

Re: Getting To Know You

English is a rich and powerful language. One can communicate readily with a vocabulary as small as 500 root words, yet garner so much more enjoyment and satisfaction from a vocabulary that extends to tens of thousands of root words.

So often I hear the complaint "yore just been picky" or something far cruder. Worse still is the whining refrain "you know what I mean". Well, maybe I can deduce, after considerable effort, what tiny notion had crossed your mind, but I consider it impolite, even disrespectful, for my correspondent to expect me to work so hard to elucidate their meaning. It is neither difficult, nor unreasonable, for someone to communicate with precision. They need not use big words - short ones can be just as good. (there's a sentence composed entirely of monosyllabics, after all)

Some brief thoughts on recent posts:

"carful wet piant" - perhaps someone has filled a vehicle with either paint or a damp piano? (not making fun of dyslexia - pointing out potential misinterpretations of this phrase)

Lynne Truss made some reasonable points in her book, although I disagree with several of her rules, and I'm not a fan of her writing style - I find it a tad repetitious. Sadly, it seems destined to be read only by those who will least benefit from it :-(

The idea of using different symbols for distinct meanings of the same word (such as "right") - what a wonderful use of the opportunity afforded by an artificial language! Someone was thinking clearly when they made that decision. I hope they made THREE symbols: one for "correct", one for the antonym of "left", and one for "entitlement". There are other subtle shades of meaning, but they can generally be collapsed into these three (although "right angle" is a sticky case...).

I love the word "hussy"! It can be teasing or insulting depending solely on intonation. A delightful word that deserves more use - far more congenial than "bitch" or "slut", both of which get used in situations where "hussy" might be more appropriate.

Yup one of my pet peevs is the imprecise use of words.

Completely true has been replaced by totally true.  Totally is the wrong meaning in the context that the root word has to do with adding things up.  Whereas complete has a more global inclusion.
Misuse of "presently" as in he is presently away from his desk.  Presently means "in a little while, soon"  Currently means "now"  So you could use  - he is currently away from his desk.  But why not cut to the chase and just say "he is away from his desk"  you could even add, "and will return presently" if ya gotta get that long word outta yer mouth.

To bare something is to reveal it, expose it.

To bear something is to carry it, as in carry a burden, or load.  Bear that in mind.

You - your - you're - yore are all different words,  The way to be precise in meaning is to be precise in spelling.

And yes I intentionally massacre my spelling from time to time when it pleases me, as long as I do not kill the meaning at the same time.  I think it makes me look younger and more cool.  And at my age I need every advantage I can get.

And since I been here a longish time it is time to renew the howdy bit

Fave book: Time enough for Love and The moon is a Harsh Mistress by R.A.Heinline, Through A Distant Mirror by Barbara Tuchman  I recommend all three.

I've had a bit of time to consider and let my indignation and ego subside, and in relation to this forum, I think you have a pretty fair point. I don't think it's a question of me not being myself, just at times being a little more considerate, so I think I'm quite happy to do that.

Your "hussy" comment brings up a fun point for me.  At the San Jose State Event Center,  the long walls of the arena are lined with motorized bleachers manufactured by a company named Hussie.  It usually brings a startled look to the uninitiated when we talk about the building Hussies or say "Roll out the Hussies"  or let's get the Hussies out on the floor".

I will not be impolite and "snip" your reply for brevity but I would like to pick up on one aspect of it; the concept of "symbols for distinct meanings of the same word". I wonder how on earth the word "set" would be managed under those circumstances, as it happens to be the single largest entry in the English dictionary!

On a slightly different issue, I do not understand why the phonetic alphabet has not been adopted throughout the nations which use the "Arabic" alphabet (and possibly beyond).

The success of phonetic spelling in language circles is down to it's ability to clearly define exactly how a word should be pronounced, regardless of it's language or dialect of origin. If we were all to adopt it, not only could our language but also our dialect of that language be written, in a way that would ensure that what we wrote would be read, in exactly the way it was intended to be read. We seem to be moving backward in the written word, rather than forward and I mourn the loss of the "eth" and "thorn" characters from the English language, which were used to descriminate between the voiced 'th' in 'that' and the unvoiced 'th' in 'throw'.

Dare I ask if you meant the "Roman" alphabet, rather than "Arabic"? (methinks you confused the alphabet with "Hindu-Arabic" numerals)

On things lost: I mourn the loss of the second person singular pronoun "thou" - it somewhat lessened the confusion for those less familar with the language (besides, it feels romantic to me for some reason). Sadly, due to political correctness we appear to be losing the third person singular pronoun (mostly in the possessive form), too - it is becoming more common to write "The victim had lost their shoes" rather than "The victim had lost his/her shoes".

I'm sorry,  I don't know the reference: Tank Girl.  Tank Boy is from the movie The Beast ,  but I'm unaware of your reference.

Bel and I have taken playful jabs at each other for a long time.  We make fun of the subtle differences between motherland and yankeeland.  But I will never forgive him for giving us King George's foot to measure things with which we are STILL stuck with.

The reason or me quoting the word Arabic was because of a confusion which existed for many years. Due to the word alphabet being of Arabic origin (as shown by the palindrome abacadacaba ( hence abracadabra) the characters we use were referred to as Arabic, despite the fact that they are nothing like Arabic characters. I appreciate that most of the Western world actually uses the Latin letter constructs.

I agree with your comment about the loss of third person singular pronoun (both masculine and feminine), due to the need for PC but I would like to know what is wrong with using the neuter pronoun? It would solve all of  the PC problems if we made reference to an indeterminate gender e.g.  The victim lost its shoes.

The idea of political correctness is reasonable up to a point. It is right that we should not attribute a masculine gender, when referring to a female but our language has now become so distorted that we have lost the fact that "man" not only indicates a male but also a species, which makes word like manhole, mantrap, maneater, manhunt, milkman, showman, all perfectly legitimate.

The expression "This weather is not fit for man nor beast" doesn't mean that it's fit for women!!

It wasn't King George's foot, it was an Anglo-Saxon foot. Anyway you should be thankful that we didn't send his madness over there as well - or did we? ;-)

The expression "This weather is not fit for man nor beast" doesn't mean that it's fit for women!!

Readers of James White's Sector General stories would appreciate the nomination of "it" and derivatives in place of "they".

Interestingly, I gather that one of the reasons for the use of third person plural in place of third person singular (which would be far more acceptable) is the implication in the use of the third person singular of androgeny. "I know someone who would post to IShotMyself if it were not embarrassed about its figure" makes the person in question sound androgenous. So instead we get the strange construction: "I know someone who would post to IShotMyself if they were not embarrassed about their figure". See what I mean?

I was amused by an article I read once that suggested the replacement of "man" could go too far. After all, replacing "man" with "woman" in "woman" produces "wowoman", which then becomes "wowowoman", and then we get told off for stuttering...

Re: Getting To Know You

I prefer "their" to "he/she" or "she/he". It sounded a bit odd at first but I'm used to it now. Calling someone "it"  sounds to me like we're calling someone a thing or an object rather than a person. I don't use the term "Man" for the species but Human. Not placing the male as the obvious dominant is a good thing, as this is reinforced by language every second of the day. To that end, as woman is just man with a bit added on, I think I'll try and use Homme and Femme. I try not to acknowledge any pressure or political correctness, and make up, and change my own mind about what is polite and considerate (PC).

Re: Getting To Know You

SCSI,
of course we could. but it wouldn't be any drippy Andrew Lloyd Webber toast. It would be fresh, and all proceeds would go towards building the ISM Mansion, of course:

Touching myself
carefully caressing
watching Aussie girls
seductively undressing...

ISM Video, and a pump of Jergins fills my need
as i enjoy the set from "Tara the Tease"

Liandra, Dandy,
and you sweetie Cle
colored pixels
on my laptop screen

A little visual is all I need
as I pull off for you before I sleep...

(to the tune of "Music of the Night")
