a short story

Silvershade
by Hurley Johnson (my pen name)

the mistake lay in allowing her to try them on in the first place. sure they only cost a dollar, but that was like putting a value on the sun. fact was, Bro loved those tremendous silver sunglasses because they made him feel like he was hiding a famous face.

Gela, however was stunning and statuesque in her own right. Hell, Bro had to admit, she needed very little accessorizing at all, a point that had been proven that very day. Wearing a great tan and little else, she mugged and mugged playfully for his camera down at the shore, her long slender lines cutting across horizon or laid lean amidst the incoming surf. "Olympic. That was the word," he thought to himself as he held her slender, muscularly defined shoulders and pressed his cheek to hers for a final picture. One that she took.

Bro unzipped his backpack to pack-up, and the pair of silver shades fell out. "OOOOH!!! Let me try those on!"

"There's no fukking way you're keeping those," Bro protested. In the past, two or three years ago, Gela had confessed one morning that the key to her entire happiness lay in the pair of dark maroon sunglasses Bro had been wearing. And, just that morning, she informed him that, oh, they were now beyond wearing. Favorites, featured in countless photos she had emailed to him on her travels.

But, as it goes, the second before her sky-blue eyes withdrew behind his sunglasses yet again, and Bro caught her wink, he confessed to himself that, yes, once again, the sunglasses were just sooo "her".

In acquiescence, he believed, there was a greater good. There was no way the glasses could ever have looked so right on him...

the end
