naked?

Just came out of an infinate loop discussion with another photographer,  unable to convince him of "the truth".  So,  I'm moving it here to the community.

Ahem!  (Clear throat,  rolling up sleeves, loosening tie,  stepping up the the soapbox).

"Naked" and "nude" are not the same word to be bandied about as interchangeable.  Nude means "without clothing" or in a bare, natural, state.  Naked means "without protection", as in "Naked City".  When I shoot a nude,  I want her to feel natural, not vunerable.  I've always stressed doing nudes,  not nakeds.  Even the smooth sound of the work "nude" is in contrast to the harder sound of "naked".

I could go on for a long time,  but I think I have exceeded my 2 minute attention span.

naked >adjective  1 without clothes.  2 (of an object) without the usual covering or protection.  3 not concealed; undisguised: naked aggression.  4 exposed to harm; vulnerable.

nude >adjective wearing no clothes. >noun a naked human figure as a subject in art or photography.

If I was in my own controled enviroment, and that could include outside, I consider myself nude. If I by unlucky chance was to be found in the Hotel lobby in the same state, I would be naked. And it's a nude beach not a naked beach. And they have nudist colonies not naked ones.

I understand what you mean and agree with you somewhat though I do think they are interchangeable to a certain extent.  Nude, to me at least, has a softer, less crude feel to the word.  It's the intent and context that mean something though. 

I could say there are nude pictures of me on the net.  This would imply that they have some sort of artistic value.  If I said there were naked pictures of me on the net this could imply that those pictures from the party last night got out.

Then to just slice and dice it, the reality of it is both statements say that there are pictures of me nekkid (nekid?).  One persones art is anothers porn is anothers filthy trash.

Well, they *can* mean the same if your friend wants to get ultra picky about it, but in an artistic context a subject sans clothing has surely always been called a nude.  If he's any sort of photographer he should know that.

I'D RATHER BE NUKED  OVER NADE  ANY DAY!! Or did I mean?...

Let's all just burn ALL of our clothes, that way we can do away with the words "nude" or "naked".

Well, The way I see it is similiar. Nude is without clothes while naked is your without clothes and up to something.

And do not forget that great Canadian poet Leonard Cohen, who used the phrase her 'nude and defenceless body'.

In that context, nude as in the total absence of clothing, versus Naked which can hace a context of 'I dare you" is much the more powerful image.

Context is everything, word choice is sometimes an agony of decision regarding subtleties to impart.

Many of the posters here are 'naked' with 'attitude' .  Some are nude with some self showing.  I scrounge the pic pile for nudes.

I was intending to remain silent of this subject but I could not resist the temptation.

Nude and Naked derive from the same thing. The only differences are in their roots and vocabulary type , so I am guessing that a local slant is put on each of the words, depending upon where in the world one lives and from which root the local language extends.

Nude stems from the Latin noun Nudus and therefore, in origin, is not a descriptive word but being from Latin should be the word of choice by most of the Romance languages.

Naked is an adjective and variously stems from (depending upon which one had it first) Nacod from Old English or Anglo-Saxon, or Nackt from the Germanic, or Naken from the Swedish and having grown from these tongues should be the word of choice for English, German, Scandinavian and Eastern Block languages.

I'm not surprised we argue about the subtlety of meaning!!

Indeed, which is which?  And, I guess as we have seen above, it does depend on the beholder:
Archeological Research or Tomb Robbing?
Used Car  or Pre-Owned?
Third World or Developing Nations?
and as has been mentioned, Art or Porn?

Language does (like everything else) evolve, though it seems prudent to retain certain conventions if for nothing else to limit misunderstandings- “my mouse died”  (did they lose a pet or have an electronic failure?)

I returned to University recently after a 30-year hiatus, and one professor is Quixotically fighting the use of “Impact” unless a meteor lands in your yard.  A lost cause I fear, as there are many official Government uses now - “Environmental Impact” etc., not to mention frequent casual use by other professors in the same dept.!

Context is imperative to understanding and even then there is a risk of misunderstanding due to colloquialisms as in someone, to parody your example, being "legless".

I believe that the greatest cause of misunderstanding is due to the adoption of English,as the international language. English is a hybrid of many other languages and is the second most complex language in the world with over 500,000 word in it, yet 80% of those who speak it have no more that 2,500 word in their vocabulary and less that 2% of speakers have over 100,000 words. To make matters worse, even the lexicographers cannot agree and the definitive tomes of the Oxford English Dictionary do not correlate with others, such as Chambers or Collins.

One of the best examples of the number of way in which a word can be utilised (and bastardised) is demonstrated by the longest entry in any dictionary and that entry is for the word "set".

Luckily for everyone, these may be my final words - until I return to this realm in the future.

To me, naked and nude are two different things. Naked is what you are when someone walks in on you when you're in the bath. Nude is when you don't attempt to cover yourself when this happens. It's a comfort thing.

Do you feel naked or nude Jing? When you place yourself in front of a camera knowing that hundreds of people are going to take a close look at you. Naked would have a more vulnerable quality where nude would have an element of control.
