Re: Currently Streaming/listening to

So yesterday I found about 40 classical cd's divided by mood and theme's on the street for hard rubbish. I have the entire collection and today is rainy and kinda miserable. This will be very appropriate to listen to today

cover1345_172027.jpg
Somehow cd's seem already outmoded. My laptop doesn't have a cd drive, so I can't upload all this amazing music to my portable facilities. However I quite like the idea of having to be at home to work through all this music. Somehow sitting still doesn't come easy to me. This will be my 40hr challenge for the month!

Re: Currently Streaming/listening to

Artemesia - In regards to your lack of disk drive, you can buy external disk drives, they plug into the usb port, super easy !
As for your observation on the popularity of cds, you are not wrong !

Rolling Stone wrote:

"Only 257 million albums – be it CD, vinyl or digital – were sold in 2014, an 11 percent drop from 2013's 289 million "Total Albums Sold" tally. The CD experienced the most frightening drop: After selling 165 million units in 2013, another 14 percent eroded off that record low total, with only 140.8 million CDs being sold in 2014. To put it in perspective, only two CDs went platinum in 2014: Taylor Swift's 1989 and the Frozen soundtrack. No other compact disc hit a million copies in 2014; Pentatonix's That's Christmas to Me came the closest with 736,000 copies."

Weird huh ? I've found myself purchasing vinyl more often than cds anyway, because they often come with a free download, which gives you both the hard and soft copy options that a cd does, but with a better quality sound ! Mind you, I feel that the quality is irrelevant when I play it through my $50 Aldi turntable... I'm saving for a better one...

Trevor - Thankyou, I'm so glad my mind amuses you as much as my photos do :-)

To get back on topic though ... THIS IS WHAT IM CURRENTLY LISTENING TO I've been waiting months and months...
I hope you enjoy it as much as I do !!!

"However I quite like the idea of having to be at home to work through all this music. " Artemesia, I very much like this thought of yours.  In fact, I like the idea of there being no recorded music at all (though I listen to quite a lot of music recordings, I'm willing to make the sacrifice). In my kingdom, we shall all hear music only played live by musicians and un-amplified; only the natural human voice and acoustic instruments.  In fact, in Vienna, if there is music in a cafe or restaurant, it is performed live and without amplification.   I hate that even in Italy (formerly the centre of music in Europe) one is bombarded by very loud recorded music in nearly every restaurant, trattoria, bar, grocery store and retail shop--even in some beautiful artisanal shops.  And the music is usually commercialised American pop music, not Italian classical, jazz, or folk.  Natural acoustics are so beautiful, so full, so rounded and rich.  For centuries upon centuries, music and oration were performed in churches and cathedrals here in Europe; and, now one is subjected to electronic amplification and very few people even know how to project their voices in these extraordinarily beautiful spaces--and the sound is atrocious.  What a loss.  It makes me weep.

Years ago in a small jazz club in Kansas City, I heard a marvelous blues singer accompanied only by acoustical instruments but even she and they used microphones.  And then a wonderful thing happened--the electricity went off but they continued.  The performance was far more beautiful and everyone could hear with perfect clarity.  The sound level was also perfection.  The blues singer even had me join in with her and asked me to return another night, as well.  Then the electricity went back on and with it the magic disappeared.

The damage to the ears of many people is very real as well, it's not just an aesthetic consideration.

I realise of course that I stand nearly alone in this; it's not a losing battle but a lost one.  I'm an anachronism in my own time.  (Also a bit of an old-fashion, liberal progressive, somewhat of a socialist in the Scandinavian tradition nursed on the 18th century enlightenment.)  Mama mia, what a misfit.  But we live well despite it all in a bit of a bubble of our own design.

Cheers to you, Artemesia as you listen at home through your found collection of classical music.  I shall think of you happily.

"Solome" the opera by Richard Strauss based on George Bernard Shaw's play is terribly erotic; as in cruel and pathological and deeply psychological.  Keep in mind too when the play and opera were written.  Solome's dance to the end of the opera is amongst the most powerful works of music written.  Here follows the link to a performance with Catherine Malfitano in the title role.  If you're not interested in seeing the whole opera, skip to 60 minutes.  http://youtu.be/T5fHCiT5eAY .

I think you will adore them, they play so beautifully and their harmonies are amazing

Sorry everyone else for the re-post but I think you'll enjoy going back

I like the idea of listening to opera more than I actually do like listening to opera. Tanhausser is the only one I've ever gotten into so far. I'll keep trying

How beautiful, Artemesia.  Thank you for introducing me to this ensemble--I would only wish they included a viola.

As for opera, perhaps if you initially attended a few performances in English (opera as theatre) you would become more drawn in.  It may have also helped that I attended my first performance at the age of seven. The local opera company believed opera should be sung in the local language so as to be understood as theatre--which has long been the European tradition.  It might also help were you to attend an opera with someone who had a passionate love for opera and you had a passionate love for that person.  I fell in love with early Renaissance Italian art because I was in love with someone who loved it--alas, a lot more than she loved me.  So I quit my job as a banker and moved to Florence alone to study art and art history.  I should add that nonetheless she and I are still very good friends.

Trevor - While I'd love to explore your kingdom of physical music for days on end, I think I'd miss the freedom that recorded music gives me ! How will I soundtrack my life ? (Unless of course in your kingdom, a band followed me everywhere I go) I'm on of those people who has a playlist for most occasions, from 'looking out the window in transit' to 'sitting in a dim room on a leather couch, drinking red wine and swaying slightly through the cloud of cigarette smoke around me'. Speaking of red wine, when I read things you've written, like "Years ago in a small jazz club in Kansas City..." I imagine you'd be sitting at the head of a table surrounded by dinner guests, swizzling your wine glass elaborately as you delve into all of your engaging stories. It seems your life thus far has been quite the adventure, and, suppose you wrote it all down in a book, I would definitely include it in my library. You could call it 'Trevorling the world'

Re: Currently Streaming/listening to

Also Trevor, your mentioning of Solome's dance reminded me of a poem I read by Clementine von Radics...

Salome dances her dance of the seven veils,
The men all eye her like wolves on the hunt, this beautiful girl
finally undressing for them. Finally they can see her
exactly as they want to.
The first veil drops.

In 2007, Kim Kardashian’s ex-boyfriend
released their sex tape against her will.
Kim Kardashian, rather than hide in shame
Used the publicity to promote her own career.

Salome moves like a dream half-remembered.
Salome dances like a siren song. All the men ache
to see the hot sugar of her hip bones.
The second veil drops.

In 2014, Kim Kardashian walks down the aisle
As the whole world watches. If only all of us
were so successful in our revenge.
If only all of us stood in our Louboutin heels
on the backs of the men who betray us,
surveying the world we created for ourselves.

The third veil drops.

Kim Kardashian knows exactly what you think of her.
She presses the cloth tighter against her skin
Her smile is a promise she never intends to keep

We can almost see all of her.
Salome shows us her body
but never her eyes.
The fourth veil is dropping.

The four things most recently tweeted at Kim Kardashian were
@KimKardashian Suck My Dick
@Kim Kardashian Can I Meet Kanye?
@KimKardashian Please Fuck Me
@KimKardashian I Love You. I Love You.

Women are told to keep their legs shut.
Women are told to keep their mouths shut.
Some women are kept silent for so long,
They become experts in the silent theft of power.
The fifth veil has dropped.

Kim Kardashian made $12 million dollars this year
Yesterday, uncountable men in their miserable jobs,
told their miserable friends that Kim was a “dumb whore”
Kim Kardashian will never learn their names.

The sixth veil has dropped.
The seventh veil has dropped.

And Salome sat beside King Herod. And he swore unto her
“Whatsoever thou shalt ask of me, I will give to thee
unto the half of my kingdom”
And she smiled, and said
“Bring me the head of John The Baptist.
Punish the man who hurt me”

I don't think much of Kim Kardashian, and I don't think that she's as wise to her actions as the author makes out - however I think this poem is really clever in the way of the comparison, and it stuck in my mind. I love the way it flashes back and forth between the two women, so different yet treated with similar attitudes. A lot of people look down their noses at Kim, and while she's not exactly seen as an activist of feminism and a role model to women and girls worldwide, she doesnt deserve the negativity she receives as much as the next woman. This poem highlights the reality of slut shaming and female objectification and it made me think.

What do you think?

Re: Currently Streaming/listening to

Dearest Sondrine, that is quite a powerful poem von Radics has written.  I would like to hear it recited.  However I think much is beyond my understanding because I'm rather lacking in awareness of pop culture--specifically I don't know anything about Kim Kardashian.  All the women in my life have been strong and intellectual and haven't felt the need to have any Herods cut off the heads of any Baptists.  I'm afraid they would find the business most distasteful.

Salome is not an attractive character; certainly not a feminist.  You will note that Salome didn't cut off John's head herself but had a king order it done for her, she having used her sexual grip on the king to effect her revenge on another man who shunned her sexuality.  In contrast, Judith herself cut off the head of the tyrant Holofernes, which made her very heroic and a better archetype for feminism.  I think the story of Salome is about extraordinary selfishness and a wanton, mercurial and decadent abuse of power; sexual eroticism without love.  It is about moral and political corruption. Conversely, I wonder if Kardashian isn't pretty small in the scheme of things.  Like you, I suspect there are more interesting stories to tell than in the world of pop culture, which is no more than the smoke and mirrors offered up by the established entertainment industry mainly in America.

Re: Currently Streaming/listening to

Sondrine, you needn't fear for your playlists.  Although my kingdom and all its domains are vast, stretching across continents and the seas, my sovereignty is not very much known let alone recognised.

To continue the discussion (my polemic?) about amplifiers and loudspeakers, last Saturday evening my daughter's class held a candlelight ceremony in a farm pasture attended by as many cows as parents.  Although the teachers who spoke did not project their voices very well, no microphone was used.  Therefore, in order to be heard, everyone present, save for the speaker, was absolutely quiet and focussed on the speaker.  What a difference from the usual gathering where no one needs to listen or truly concentrate on what is being spoken or sung for a speaker to be heard.  When a whole group or crowd of people are concentrating together on listening without an electronically amplified sound system, a rather magical atmosphere is created--this in addition to the beauty and diversity of natural acoustics, together with surrounding ambient sounds. Harmony and balance with the world around us are too often lost to us by our isolating artificial creations.

This is not an argument against technology but rather an argument against the inappropriate use of technology and the loss therefore to ourselves individually and collectively--as well as to the natural environment, which harms not only humans but all life.

Addendum, when I make love with a woman, I want to hear her whispers, her breathing, her heartbeat... and sounds from the open window of birdsong and leaves rustling in the wind.  I do not want recorded music to compete with the reality around us.  (Well, after all, this is supposed to be an erotic forum so I ought not stray too far for too long from its purpose and the expectations of the members.)

Re: Currently Streaming/listening to

It's been so hot & humid here in south west England this week & tonight I've been sat by the window watching the thunderstorms gather in the night sky & drinking far too much red wine & these are the songs I've been listening to really really loud through my headphones. I think there's something so raw & elemental & sensual about thunderstorms & these songs just seem to evoke & heighten that atmosphere & I hope you find them sensual too : )

Re: Currently Streaming/listening to

Ben, I love that kind of weather ! It's quite cold here - and while I don't mind it too much, I love the thickness and the smell of the air around the time of a summer storm.

I haven't heard much of their music, but I like Cocteau twins for their slow, ethereal sounds - Coincidentally, their song Pandora is one of my favourite songs to listen to in the rain ! It's interesting to hear their heavier side, but out of the three, my favourite was 'Serpentskin', so I think I prefer their softer, dreamier stuff. The guitar in it reminds me of Tamaryn. Actually, quite similar to Cocteau twins in general.
Im Gone by Tamaryn - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zsaRS3P04fU

If you like that kind of sound, here are two 'same-same but different' vibes:
Dune by Beaches - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N9y1OdaR8Wg
Pure by Blackbird Blackbird - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2XcxKc7jlRg

Along with this kind of music, for rainy days, you can't go past piano music. My favourite pianist (perhaps a little generic of me) is Erik Satie and there's a great video on youtube that compiles the 'Trois Gymnopédies' and 'Six Gnossiennes' accompanied by some lovely nature. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dtLHiou7anE

...and to bombard you and anyone else that loves watching the rain, a few of my favourite tracks from my 'Rain' playlist:

We Move Lightly by Dustin O'Halloran - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yveWjPz0O18
DayDream by Nitin Sawhney - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gj0Xl_dEhcs
I see who you are by Bjork - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oEisAm6XSc4
Alone in Kyoto by Air - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XUjAtYQkFm8
The Plains/Bitter Dance by Fleet Foxes - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l-SVE8ox8O4
A Walk by Tycho - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mehLx_Fjv_c

I really do hope you listen to and enjoy them, even if it isn't raining, they'll surely bring you calm.

Re: Currently Streaming/listening to

Sondrine thank you from the bottom of my heart for all the wonderful music you've shared. It's exciting that you sent me so many amazing new things to discover & i'm overwhelmed at how much i loved all your suggestions!! Had a pretty horrid day today so i've spent tonight escaping by listening to all your songs & you somehow managed to send me exactly the kind of music i needed : )

Before i talk about anything else, just wanted to say that oh my god that Tamaryn song (I'm Gone) is one of the most gorgeous & breathtaking songs i've heard for ages & i must have played it at least 10 times so far tonight & it still makes me tearful when i listen to it it's just so beautiful. I think if someone were to ask me which music affects me emotionally the most right now i'd probably give that song alongside 'Immortal" by Marina & The Diamonds which really affects me deeply too alongside so many of her other songs:-

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dYGKxxTXqSs

Will definitely be looking for & discovering everything i can find by Tamaryn now : ) I haven't been this excited by a new musical discovery for ages & i really can't thank you enough for sending me that song : )

I found the Blackbird Blackbird song Pure really gorgeous too, its so delicate & pretty & the sounds almost shimmer & glisten in your head as you listen & is one of those songs that makes you stop what you're doing & close your eyes & smile & drift into daydreams. It reminded me a little of another song i posted earlier in this thread that kind of does that, called 'Cover Your Tracks' by Young Galaxy which i think you might like : )

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dHW1y-2YBlE

I really enjoyed Dune & loved the intriguing combination of early New Order drums & guitar but with 60's-esque psychedelic dreamy vocals. I can see that being on my playlist for lying in the park in the sunshine looking at the clouds drift overhead…thats the kind of feeling it gave me.

Oh my god i LOVE that you have a rain playlist!!!! That's so cool!!!! : ) Thats exactly what i do…create playlists for different times of the day & indeed for different weather, & for the atmospheres & emotions & images in my head that those different times create. I have playlists for everything!! I'll definitely be adding your choices to my own rain/storm playlist : ) I really enjoyed listening to them & was fascinating & so much fun to see how your mind interprets that amazing atmosphere through the songs you chose : ) I loved how you mentioned the thickness & smell of the air during summer storms. Its one of my favourite things, the incredible smell of the air when a storm breaks down all the humidity & replaces it with the most incredible freshness, like the smell of a waterfall in a forest or something…it's amazing isn't it!! The Dustin O'Halloran instrumental particularly made me think of rain for some reason, i wonder if thats why you chose it. I think his piano lines definitely create the image of rain falling. I could listen to that song all day, its so tranquil & beautiful. The way the violin gently drifts in & around the piano, like the interplay between two ballet dancers, was sublime & mesmerising. The flute (i think it was a flute, but played with almost middle eastern inflections at times) in the Nitin Sawhney track was sublime too.

The Tycho track excited me a lot as i love ambient electronic music & i'm very excited you posted songs by Bjork, Air & Fleet Foxes & I loved the tracks you chose, as i absolutely LOVE all three of those bands!!! Bjork i used to listen to absolutely loads when i lived in London & somehow her songs created the absolute perfect atmosphere for when i found myself travelling on the underground on my own at night or walking through the city in the rain & i remember being obsessed with the album 'Homogenic', especially songs like 'All Neon Like' & 'Immature'

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6w6fXUCEZaA

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b4UwLOg-gbY

For some reason i stopped listening to her when i left London & so most if not all of her more recent stuff is totally new to me & so was exciting to listen to the track you shared. It's very different to the songs above…less electronica, more experimental but the more i listened the less challenged & more into it i became & by the end i really liked it. You've definitely inspired me to start listening to her again.

Fleet Foxes are another band where i fell in love with an album & an LP of theirs a few years ago then somehow forgot about them & don't know why. I'll never forget the first time i heard tracks like Mykonos or Blue Ridge Mountains…simply sublime & unlike anything else i've ever heard.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DT-dxG4WWf4

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L5dUsZ4Djd0

Was such a treasure to listen to them again & i thought the track you chose for your playlist is gorgeous & so evocative. I think i'm going to be playing this song a lot!!

I used to listen to Air a lot when i was at university because they recorded the sound track to a film i was obsessed by at the time, called 'The Virgin Suicides' directed by Sofia Coppola, still one of my favourite ever films, although i find it hard to watch anymore because its really upsetting & almost too beautiful to cope with right now. The soundtrack is unbelievably gorgeous & if you haven't heard this song from the film you should definitely check it out. Its called 'Playground Love':-

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aCm7K9j6O00

I love the Sofia Coppola connection with the Air track you posted!! Thats such a beautiful coincidence : ) I love Lost in Translation so much & this song is so beautiful too, i loved hearing it again & i think it definitely fits perfectly with your rain playlist : ) You have great taste in film soundtracks too!!

Sondrine there's absolutely no need to feel like recommending Satie is in any way generic!!!! I love his music so much & i don't think i could have got through university without a cd i had of exactly the music you shared, it was what i played whenever i needed to unwind from writing & i'm sure it saved quite a lot of my work because of the way it seemed to reset my mind from being worked up & stressed.

I'm so excited you listened to the Cocteau Twins songs i shared & loved them!!!! : ) Thank you so much for telling me what you thought & for saying which you liked best : ) Im so thrilled you had heard some of their songs before, especially an early song like Pandora as i love their early stuff the most. Pandora is such a gorgeous song & it's made my day knowing you love that song. When you're next in a record store keep a look out for the album 'Treasure' which Pandora is from & which i know you'll love : ) Knowing now that you prefer the softer dreamier side of their work, i'm really glad i chose Serpentskirt & that you liked that too : ) Whilst i do love their darker heavier material, absolutely laden with powerful staccato analogue drum machine loops (i LOVE those old reel to reel drum machines, i think they're so cool!!!), thundering bass lines & waves of interwoven effects-laden layered guitars that i find so evocative of stormy skies, i do love their more ethereal dreamscapes too. Liz Fraser has a voice unlike anyone i've heard before, its totally mesmerising & i find it fascinating how she creates her own words & language in her lyrics which gives her unique voice an almost indecipherable mystery to it which i find so enchanting. Here is probably my favourite of their dreamier songs which i'd love to share with you & which i hope you'll love. It's called 'Pink Orange Red' :-

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kMFdvBz2AyM

Thanks again Sondrine for all the amazing recommendations…you've helped me discover some amazing music & that really means a lot. I've had so much fun listening to everything & writing to you : )

Ben xx

Re: Currently Streaming/listening to

Ben, what a rich response full of lovely and honest opinions ! I'm glad you enjoyed my selections, and I'm glad they improved your day :-)

In response to your suggestions, here are my notes:
-I've never been too keen of Marina and the Diamonds, while she has an incredible voice, the songs I've heard are too poppy for my liking, but I found Immortal more to my liking. Quite beautiful.
-I didn't think much of 'Cover your tracks', mainly because I went through an indie phase in highschool and the steel drums are a bit overdone for me now.
-I love Bjork's slower stuff, the second one in particular - WOW ! I should really listen to more of her. She has a new album out too !
-While Fleet Foxes' music is beautiful, it's all a bit samey for me - nice in playlists though. If you like them, you'll definitely like Boy and Bear. They're quite similar.
This is their album, my favourites are Part time believer, House and Farm and Beach (Gosh, I haven't listened to them in years, it's such a nice album) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nQYMecc … ietikznqXO
-Playground Love has got to be one of my all time favourite Air songs ever. It's so dreamy. My boyfriend has Moon Safari on vinyl, and I managed to sneak it out of his place, I had it for ages, lucky me ! I also love the virgin suicides, which I only recently saw for the first time. As a photographer, the aesthetic of Sophia Coppola appeals to me greatly, especially in this film. (No one can beat Wes Anderson though - but that's another essay) I do really need to see Lost in Translation hey... I've heard only good things, just never gotten round to it!
-I didn't like the Cocteau Twins song much - it was a bit meh. I'll have to explore their work a bit more.

Thanks again for the recommendations Ben, I leave you with three songs I've listened to most this passed week:
-Weight of Love by The Black Keys - fuck they're sexy, my sex playlists are abundant with their tracks.

-Rainbow by Boris - an old favourite I've recently rediscovered. Nice n mellow with a grindy twist at the end.

-The Other Side of the Game by Eryka Badu - she is a QUEEN my gosh, so sexy and sassy and funny and beautiful and above all talented. This song is from her album Baduizm which I highly suggest. I play it while working through folios all the time.
