to be honest i'm not really into hardcore. I like punk but I'm more into punk rock. I hate new skool punk. And emo is pretty bad.

just my opinion but i think the term 'emo' is a big wank. emotionally charged punk - what the...? all music, whatever genre, has emotion attached to it in some way. i'm not much into punk/hardcore but i tend to listen to older stuff when in the mood - ramones, iggy pop and new york dolls.

yeah its hard not to get into the groove for sex when listening to the ramones. same goes if not more so for mr pop. but labels for genres are so often meaningless anyway...for example, pop just means popular music. but it doesnt. when you say pop music you know exactly what kind of genre your talking about. it's going to be upbeat, happy, comerically slick sounding. but to me all emo just sounds the same. unfortunetly its the year of emo. before that was the garage revival and before that was rap rock ~is there anything more disgusting?~

but there's cool stuff around....you just have to wade through the crap first...but there are a few bands around at the moment doing really innovative and exciting stuff....so dont despair

you probably already knew this though but hardcore music was named after hardcore pornography. hardcore is assoicated with the straight edge movement which was all about not drinking doing drugs or having promiscuous sex.

the pinnacle for me was Nirvana's "Bleach" and "on the Muddy Banks of the Wishnaka"
just complete abandon and fuck all this. it was so original. and still is almost 20 years on.

Since you're sort of in Dischord/Washington DC area with Minor Threat and Black Flag, you could add Fugazi to your list.  And I always liked Big Black, despite their relentlessly dark view of the world.  Would also recommend investigating the late 70s/early 80s No Wave scene in New York.  It leads down some interesting paths, if you can deal with the artiness.

Never got the hang of emo myself but interestingly (or not) Lou Barlow's (Dinosaur Jr, Sebadoh, etc.) new solo album is called Emoh.  Could be a forthcoming purchase... his site www.loobiecore.com.

Actaully i dont' like fugazi....im not into the whole indie/emo thing which fugazi started...im fact i dislike it lol. And for the folks who say there are no good punk bands around you have goto be crazy! sure you wont find them on MTV but just look at bands like slumlords, toxic narcotic, the unseen, kill your idols,bane...i could continue forever. Not to metnion all the mainstays still around like sick of it all, slapshot, agnostic front,7 seconds, youth brigade, etc.
and actually the term hardcore was introduced when  D.O.A. named a cd hardcore '81

Nothing is as funny as a bunch of stupid mall rats who listen to emo talk about how punk rock they are and then immediatly shut up when a skinhead walks by.

You really shouldn't get *too* hung up on labelling genres.  There are really only two types of music:  good music and bad music.

True...i mean i also listen to rap(public enemy!) even though i dont like the genre as a whole...but all i meant is that fugazi wasnt really my thing cause of they way they sound, and that song gave birth or help give birth to the emo genre....its funny   ian mackye of minor threat helped start hardcore...the most heavy, brutal form of punk, yet he also started emo and indie...(which i dont consider punk ), the lightest poppyest forms of punk

although no one person started hardcore punk...it was basiclly all the american kids being tired of new wave and generic british punk...so they played it faster , turned distorion up and decided give the birdie to the entire music industry as a whole, which is still the reason i love punk and hardcore today...sure you got the industry trying to sell it on mtv and little teenie boppers using it as an image but you still got  the kids keeping it loud, fast and true

For me, the birth of emo was way before Fugazi.  Right after Minor Threat, Ian did a project called Embrace.  It's also on Discord.  Plus you also had the earlier Dag Nasty stuff right after Dave Smalley left, which I would consider "preemo".

Wow, a new genera born.  Like we need another.
