ARTISTS STATEMENT

Four months ago, I had an operation on my breasts. I'll spare you the boring details but while my breasts look totally normal, even good, now and the scars have faded, the ones in my mind have had some trouble leaving. It's incredibly hard to regain a sense of control when your body is acting against your will and malfunctioning without warning, even worse when it's affecting a part of your body that's integral to your basic identity as a woman. Too many people and organizations would have me feel shame over my nude body, calling natural human urges 'sinful' or 'dirty', and this is my way of burying that ignorance and my feelings of helplessness forever. My aim as far as art goes was not just for me to get in touch with my natural, shameless, human self, but to make some statements about self-love. The candle photos, for example, are emblematic of learning to romance yourself, EVERY part of yourself. The ducks are symbolic of not just conscience, but of loving and embracing both your light and dark sides, and learning to balance both of those while gaining positive experiences from both sides. All in all, I'd say I've gained a lot more from this experience than I've expected but, as usual, I still have a long way to go on my emotional journey and a lot more to learn.
