ARTISTS STATEMENT

Whiskey Slough is one of the names for the beautiful wild river that is my home. Having been newly named by each generation of explorers, my river home has gone by as many names as I have stage names. She slows and dries, rushes and floods, changes direction, and offers life to me and many other animals and plants. Living free in one of the last wild places on earth, I've done a lot of thinking about the ways and reasons the land and rivers are being desecrated, stripped, drilled, raped, used up, re-routed, drained, exploited, and murdered. As a woman living in a patriarchy I've experienced many of the same things. I've come to understand that we in this culture are collectively conditioned, from birth, to hate women, nature, emotions, and all that dark messy stuff. Like women, the land is defined as a resource, something to exploit rather than enter into relationship with. That's what it really comes down to, I think: resource versus relationship. Sex, of course, is where this plays out the most dramatically. Like my ancient whore counterparts, I seek to use raw feeling and sensation to restore our sacred relationship with the earth and each other. This is my two dimensional effort.
