ARTISTS STATEMENT

I'm very lucky to have this body. In a lot of ways it's politicized and hypersexualized and fetishized and sometimes deliberately harmed, but it's also beautiful and I'm still learning how to care for it and protect it. I love this body. My art practice is really focused on this idea of radical vulnerability at the moment. It's so beautiful to realize that as a descendant of enslaved Africans and indigenous Americans I am direct evidence of their resilience and survival against all odds. I am the evidence. I am a lot of inherited features and traumas; but a lot of love and memory and power also lives in my blood. And my continuing to be vulnerable, to be open and to exist is revolutionary. It's everything my ancestors wanted. A woman who can keep opening herself up to be seen, without fear. It's enough.
