ARTISTS STATEMENT

You know how self-help books/videos/speeches always tell you that a sure-fire way to overcome self-deprecating acts is to look in the mirror everyday and tell yourself that you're beautiful? I was probably about 12 when I looked in the mirror and decided the opposite, told myself out loud that I was ugly and just had to accept it so I could move on and try to find value in myself beyond physical appearance. That didn't happen, and instead I just invested more and more energy into trying to change how I looked on the outside, because to me my body was not meant for me, I was destined to be skinnier, more delicate, and just more "beautiful". I'm still not past those feelings, no matter how many times I try to give myself credit for qualities that are deeper than skin (like loyalty, friendship, honesty, and intelligence), but I'm starting to enjoy being naked. So, to embrace that change, and really take advantage of this moment in time where I feel somewhat at home in my skin, I wanted to shoot myself so I could prolong the happiness I feel in my body.
