ARTISTS STATEMENT
I think a lot about silence. Until recently I thought about the silencing of women, of indigenous people, trans people, people with disabilities. I thought about silence in terms of stopping the words of a person, closing the mouths of those who challenge power. But there is another, equally sinister silence that we must become aware of; that of the body. As a survivor of sexual abuse, a NB person, and a sufferer of mental illness, I have often silenced my body's hunger, pain, fear and pleasure. Throughout my life this has endangered my well-being and safety. I am always finding new ways to foster my love and express myself. Learning to love my body in all its glory in a culture that pressures me every day to hate it is a lifetime of work and struggle; this project has been a positive and lasting part of that.
