ARTISTS STATEMENT

I was drawn to this project by the strong focus on empowerment and positive body image. As a teenager and young adult, I had a very warped body image and low body confidence, partly due to the ingrained pressure put on young women to conform to an ideal body type. As a 23 year old, I took up Latin dancing, which, to me, is a soulful form of art through body movement and truly celebrates bodies in all shapes and sizes – dancing is for everybody. Dancing has taught me to love every aspect of my body. It has changed the way I walk, how I carry myself and how I feel about myself. I feel incredibly calm and connected to the world when I am naked. Our bodies are capable of producing such beautiful art and self-expression when we accept them wholly as they are.

biggest passion in my life: I’m a creative mind as well as an advocate for social issues. My passion for my creative mind is dancing; it is pure self-expression in the moment, where you feel completely alive
I like to listen to: Music with soul. Anything from RnB to Latin dance music
I like to watch: Satire, historical adaptation movies and documentaries
I like to smell: Burning scented candles
I like to taste: Mexican food. I also learnt how to cook traditional Mexican food whilst living there
I like to feel: Connection. To people, places and music
favourite part of my body: My eyes. I got them from my Mum
favourite part of someone else's body: I love the curve in the back. I think it’s a very poetic aspect of the body
Why i shot myself: Female empowerment is something I strongly believe in and having ownership over how my body is presented to the world felt incredibly liberating
who I'd least like to see shoot themselves: I’d be open to seeing anyone shoot themselves. I think it is an empowering experience

Films I like: Are well written and something I can connect deeply with. I also like trashy Rom-Coms. Recent favourites include Spotlight and Embrace of the Serpent (Spanish)
