ARTISTS STATEMENT

The way we grow up to see ourselves is influenced by the media from such a young age. There are women in countries outside of Australia who never wear clothes or cover their breasts, but in my society, women are shamed for their bodies from such a young age and grow to be embarrassed by our own nakedness. It is so ingrained in us to dislike the way we look that we as women need to fight to own our bodies again. I think this is such an important project as personally, there have been so many things I have disliked about my body. I hated my thighs, and didn't think I could hate any part of my body more. That was before I grew breasts - which looked nothing like those I had seen in movies. I used to try to make my nipples erect before ever being naked in front of someone else, as I hated the way they sat when not stimulated. I hate that I felt like that, and still often do. I think about my future children and if I had girls, I would hate for them to think that the way their body is naturally is not okay. So every time I have a negative thought I try to block it out - so that it becomes instinct to see myself in a good light. This way, hopefully, when I get to raising my own kids they will have a much easier time loving themselves because they will grow up without the same shame I endured. This project really helped me see my body in a way that made me feel sexy and in control and, for once, not as though I had to edit and change the way I look.
