ARTISTS STATEMENT

I decided to shoot myself as I'm slowly learning to appreciate, respect and care for myself and my body, rather than self-flagellating - this is one such exercise. With no prior contributions to pornographic or erotic material, I decided to take part in I Shot Myself as a writer interested in exploring the idea of receiving capital for my bodily labour and self-expression for the first time. The shooting process of ISM was demanding, yet it allowed me to further explore my own self-image and sexual identity and consider the site of the body, gender and the economy of erotic imagery. As such, I enjoyed the ISM process immensely and found shooting outdoors in my inner-city urban backyard - where I could've been caught out at any moment - exciting and arousing. I would recommend ISM to any woman wishing to contribute to an impressive archive of images of female sexuality that avoid the interruptions and demands of an entitled, white male gaze.
