Of course genetic programming isn't 100% of our behaviour, but it does go a long way towards understanding the form some of our emotions take. If men need certainty of fatherhood and women seek protection of their young, then it would be natural for us to fear rivals of the opposite sex more. If my wife has sex with another woman she is not being exposed to alien sperm. If I have sex with another man, she need not fear that my attention could be divided between her children and the children I have with another mate.
