I agree with kellie, the red wool was particularly novel and whether it is a symbol of an element of femininity, menstruation perhaps, or of humanity, blood vessels, or the ties that bind us all together through our blood relations, or whether it was just something which looks good by its stark contrast, it was a useful device.
