all the new types on the stereo...

hunxandhispunx_hardlyart_sheastadium-608x405.jpg

I have a confession to make....

Having been committed to only myself for the past 2yrs or so, I used to miss sex a whole bunch, until i rediscovered mosh pits.

At first it was cathartic- it would exercise me of some of the poison i still had residing in me from a torturous ex. I could stamp and scream, pull my hair and hurt myself in an environment, where not only was I supported, but fully encouraged to do so. I have no shame in admitting I re-enacted many scenes in my head of him, no shame in reminding myself that it all began because I took a liking to his taste in music. Then as I slowly recovered, the benefits of mosh pit fit well into my theory of the benefits of sex...

For me, sex is the act of moving your body against someone else's, grinding away at the pretence of yourself till you re-emerge a more polished and better being as a result of the experience. The similarities between the act of dancing violently in a crowd and having sex with an individual are in parallel in my definition.

Shit so when the scene evolves (or at least it's evolution becomes apparent to me on the other side of the world of where most of the stuff is generated) I have to say something about it, and share with you folks.

Lots about last year seemed to be about the performance of gender, and frankly up the punx who challenge that shit.

Let's start this youtube party!

Firstly- Retaking rock down...
'Hunx and His Punx is the brainchild of San Francisco based performer/personality Hunx, aka Seth Bogart. They are the first ever "girl group"fronted by a flamboyant gay male whose dream in life is to sound like a girl.

Proving himself a legendary child in his own right, Hunx is charming gays and squares alike with his live shows and candour. The music pays homage to a variety of influences. Forming after years of dancing in queer-centered electro outift Gravy Train!!! Hunx and His Punx' unique style defies genre and serves up equal helpings of 60′s girl group, bubblegum pop, and new wave with all of the hallmarks of the Bay Area garage rock scene that Seth emerged from. The songs carry their own weight, where Seth’s voice is the star. His voice is awesome –a nasally seductive combination of a whine and a croon that colours the music’s vivid stories. '

Now for some disco. And a more local flavour, 'Zanzibar Chanel.'

https://soundcloud.com/zanzibar-chanel

I have never seen a sexier naked bear of a man groove his junk to disco more poetically than the frontsman of Zanzibar. It has been so inspiring to see someone beyond comfortable in their skin, to make it a point of talent, and sing at the same - damn fine.

Big Freedia! Nearly an omission???? Ridiculous, she's irreplacable amazing in everyway...

Sissybounce is 'stripper' dance on overdrive and a genre Big Freedia can be almost be credited as starting... Deal with the repetition of lyrics for the dancers. Next best working environment to ISM I imagine wink

Back to the punx- LimpWrist.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u5fOTm2gjas

These guys are awesome. I saw them post new years after I broke my foot (don't ask, there's no story to tell, I kicked a bit of wood accidentally) and damn if I wasn't back in that pit limp and all. What's so good about them? They are a queercore (hardcore, straightedge, but homo) band in a scene where performativity of masculinity on stage and off stage is so important. They challenge the shit out of this  by rocking the crowd with their brand of blastbeats and screaming (about cruising the dancefloor for hot dudes- teeheheh) and then smile and fawn about the audience... So cute!

Does FeverRay deserve to be in this list for challenging the way we expect female artists to sound? There's so much to love about her performance, image and music. But she can make you fall in love with her without any help from me.

My first mosh pit experience was in 1996 at a Soundgarden concert at Festival Hall, Melbourne... It was the best smile

Re: all the new types on the stereo...

So glad I started this thread! I was too tired to go into the moshpit on Saturday sad we played a show, and then instead of reverting to my usual antics, I just stood back. Sadly not many others were willing to take my place, ladies you hearten me with tales of your dancing deeds!

meanwhile to cheer me up, and maybe the rest of you too....
