Technical information

First of all, I'd like to say I'm new here and I think it's a really fantastic site, with some beautiful and interesting images on it.

I maybe being a bit nerdy, but would it be possible to see some general technical information about folios, such as camera/lenses used, film where applicable, lighting conditions?

Re: Technical information

Hi - I have used a Canon Ixus 4mp camera on my first few sets - then I upgraded to a Nikon D50 with a standard portraiture lens.

I have worked in a range of lighting conditions - from bright sunlight outside in the park to candlelit or fairlyight lit sets in almost pitch black. Have a look at what I have shot so far and let me know if there is anything I can do better or any shots you think I managed to shoot particularly well smile

You can see my sets here:

Starbright, trick or treat and mythical are the ones using low or single light sources and the others use natural sunlight.

Enjoy smile

Hi Alisha,

Thanks for the feedback and for pointing me towards your folios. They are all beautiful, as are you :-)

Re: Technical information

Anatoli, are you saying you'd like to see that as a feature on this site? I don't know how viable that would actually be but I think it's a nifty idea anyway.

Re: Technical information

Ngaio, yes that was more my thinking. Nothing too specific like down to shutter speeds and apertures, but maybe just have a general technical field where the artist could write anything appropriate, if they're interested.

Re: Technical information

If we made a little statement for each folio - rather than just an overall one - we could explain a little about the folio, how we made it, how we felt at the time etc maybe?

@anatoli - Glad you enjoyed the folios - that's what they are there for smile

Excellent idea, we'll suggest it to the management :-)

Love you Alisha xxxx

Re: Technical information

I used a sony alpha 350, general kit-lens it came with (not the best for portraiture, I can't remember the specs at the moment), mixed medium light. I always try and keep the ISO on 100 but was unable to in this foilo because of the lighting.

*Blushes* Thanks anatoli

Arana, Absolutely stunning smile

Look forward to more folios from you.

Is anyone using film cameras still? Or used something unexpected?

I also wondered what video cameras people were using - I am having horrible problems with mine - hence the lack of videos still in my series of folios sad

Any suggestions?

Re: Technical information

I have one that looks like this: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sony-DCR-DVD110 … 978&sr=1-1 (Not sure if that is the exact model but there abouts)

It records to mini dvd - but when I put the files through a convertor to make them mpeg videos to send to ISM they suddenly change from widescreen to 4:3 - squashing the image...

Does anyone know a free convertor which can rip a dvd file to mpeg and not do this?

I really wanted to send over a video before Xmas for you guys!

xxx

Re: Technical information

You could try Streamclip http://www.squared5.com/

Here's a video on how to convert a whole load of files (clips) only your converting from mini DV to Mpeg so your conversion screen will have the settings in the pic below. The bit your interested in starts at 1:10 http://www.vimeo.com/5567787 forget what he says at the beginning about needing a seperate external hard drive they convert OK from one part of the same internal drive to another.

Export.png

If you have any probs with the batch method, to convert the files one at a time click file/open files, then select the file to load, press open and it will apear in the picture frame, then click File/export to Mpeg-4, and you'll get the above window. I think the settings for you are correct but anyone who edits at Feck could tell you if any of the settings I've shown aren't right. Anyway ask me if you get any probs.

Re: Technical information

Hi - looks like that might support ripping straight from mini dvds - which is exactly what i need.

My backup plan is to record onto mini DVDR instead of my RWs & just posting them to ISM so either way a video will appear!

Re: Technical information

Same here! I gathered questions from the forum to answer in the video and I intend to keep my promise to answer them lol smile

I know a few people want a video just to hear my English accent as well so plenty of chatting will be found as well as, of course, nudity. I never wear clothes at home unless someone else is in anyway - so it's pretty much just going to be a video of me being me !
